Haven't been on the aviation groups for a while and am cleaning out
some flying closets. what is the best group to list these ? for
example: have a military Bendix J-8 aerobatic gyro with voltage
changer from 12 volt to operating voltage. Offers ???

I would auction them on eBay, with notices to r.a.misc, r.a.owning,
and r.a.piloting (everything gets posted there), and also posts to
aviation type clubs which aircraft would use these things.

rec.aviation.marketplace is the ONLY appropriate rec.avation group to post
such notices. Period.

r.a.piloting isn't appropriate for probably 1/2 of the posts
there...but they happen anyway. If the OP wants to sell his stuff,
r.a.p has to be included. Period.

The amount of off-topics posts in r.a.p don't justify even more.
The fact remains that rec.aviation.marketplace is the place
for ads.

While true, I haven't once browsed re.aviation.marketplace. I don't
think too many people do.
